Leading Threats to the Integrity of Your Home's Sewer Lines

    Last updated 9 days ago

A backed up sewer line is a homeowner’s worst nightmare. In addition to being unpleasant and unsanitary, compromised sewer lines can also be expensive to repair. Furthermore, if the leaks occur in your basement, the moisture damage can compromise the structural integrity of your home. Understanding the causes of sewer pipe leaks can help you take steps to prevent problems from occurring in the first place.

    Food Items

Although your sink’s garbage disposal is able to handle a small amount of disposed food, excessive amounts can build up in the sewer lines and cause serious clogs. This is especially true when it comes to particular types of food. For example, cooking grease and oil, eggshells, and high-fiber foods don’t break up easily and therefore have a higher chance of getting stuck in your pipes and causing serious backups down the road. To prevent this from happening, simply dispose of food items in places other than your sink.

    Tree Roots

Invasive tree roots are one of the most common causes of faulty sewer lines. Unfortunately, because the roots are underground, they can often strike with little notice. The roots of large trees often branch out in search of water and nutrients. When they accidentally strike a sewer line, the roots begin to grow quickly and increase in size. Over time, the roots will penetrate the sewer line itself, causing serious clogs. These clogs can lead to severe backups. In some cases, homeowners will have a large tree removed only to have the remnant roots still cause problems with their sewer lines.

A faulty sewer line is the last thing you want to deal with. Don’t wait until it’s too late. If you want to know more about the leading threats to the integrity of your home’s sewer lines, call the Seattle area’s Beacon Plumbing, Heating & Mechanical at (206) 452-4363.

We just used Beacon again and originally found them in the Yellowpages. I do not know the owner of the company but I can say that I am very happy with the quality of their services and quick response time. Our sewer main was backed up and they came right out today on a Saturday and cleaned the line and solved our problems. More
